The Imber Gardens

What herbs we don’t obtain from the wild we cultivate, in a garden about an acre in size. It is a constant lens for the flow of the seasons, always reminding us to pay close attention. Everything here is grown organically. Although all food is best by this method, we believe herbs are particularly sensitive to foreign chemicals, often concentrating them to the detriment of the medicine. We also use low-impact cultivation methods – everything is mostly done by hand, with the aid of digging fork and pick-axe. The gardens are very diverse, offering over thirty different species of medicinal herbs for production. This allows for ample room to rotate plantings – following a vegetable garden one year with oats the next, for example. We are also trying to bring many of the endangered botanicals of this region and beyond into cultivation. Among these herbs are Arnica, Black Cohosh, Echinacea, Goldenseal and Ginseng. It’s all part of giving back to the plants. There’s nothing like a warm summer’s day when the gardens are in full bloom. There are many butterflies and birds of all kinds that visit us daily. If you’re ever interested in stopping by, let us know. We can give you a list of upcoming garden walks, or even schedule a personal tour, June through October.

Hops trellised at the entrance to a garden bed; these strong vines will quickly take over any structure they find, yielding masses of aromatic and bitter strobiles. Great for dream pillows, or even for an afternoon rest!
