Guido Masé RH(AHG) is a clinical herbalist, herbal educator, and garden steward specializing in holistic Western herbalism, though his approach is eclectic and draws upon many influences. He spent his childhood in Italy, in the central Alps and in a Renaissance town called Ferrara. After traveling the United States, he settled into central Vermont where he has been living since 1996.

He works clinically and teaches as a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild, and is a part of United Plant Savers and the American Botanical Council.

Grian Herbs / Imber Gardens, Montpelier, VT. Founded and directs a private herbal business, from the spring of 1998 to the present, focusing on custom extraction of fresh, bioregional, organically grown plants. Maintaining the business involves growing and processing the raw material, as well as ordering supplies, costing and labeling the final products for local sale, operating a retail booth at a Farmer’s Market, and marketing and distributing to local retail outlets. Designed and maintains a comprehensive website, www.grianherbs.com

Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, Montpelier, VT. Co-founded (2007) and directs a non-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to providing our community with healthcare resources grounded in Nature. VCIH offers free and sliding-scale herbal consultations through its community clinic, as well as affordable classes that empower individuals to take care of themselves and their families, whenever appropriate. It also provides comprehensive herbalist training programs, which include clinical experience gained through collaborative practice in the community clinic. www.vtherbcenter.org

Montpelier Herbal Health, Montpelier, VT. Founded (2001) a private herbal practice, serving members of the local community. Clients receive a comprehensive health intake (between two and three hours) and recommendations are made on the basis of the client’s wishes; the case history; diagnostic findings based on observation of the tongue, skin, eyes, and physiognomy; intuition and divination; and personalized research reviews. Maintaining the practice also involves scheduling, contacting, and providing ongoing/emergency support for clients; stocking an apothecary; and community outreach and education.

Sage Mountain Free Herbal Clinic, Barre, VT. Participated in clinical practice as a founding member from the summer of 2001 to the present. Patients are evaluated according to holistic herbal therapy, which includes a patient intake (focused on current complaints, history, and context), consultation / counseling (during which treatment options and holistic physiological connections are explored and discussed), formulation of botanical remedies and support therapies, and two follow-up visits. Since 2005, served as an informal “mentor” for new practicing herbalists who join the Clinic. All services, including an initial course of medicines, are provided free of charge. The Clinic was honored by the American Herbalists Guild at its 2004 conference in New Hampshire.

Grian Herbs Apprenticeships, Montpelier, VT. Began a two-phase comprehensive herbal training program with the goal of providing an accessible, affordable and rigorous training option for members of the local community.
The “first level” program began in 2003, and runs yearly from June to November, meeting weekly for 6 hours. Students engage in practical relationship with local herbs, in the woods and gardens: making medicines, learning plant stewardship, exploring and deepening empathy and nature connection, and exploring the basics of holistic human physiology. It is offered on a “work-exchange” basis: students are instrumental in harvesting and processing herbal medicines for Grian Herbs, and thus pay only a small materials fee.
The “second level” program began in the winter of 2005. It consists partly of a four-month didactic period from January through May. Two sessions a month, 6 hours each, focus on in-depth holistic human physiology; energetic and biochemical understanding of “pathology”; diagnostic techniques; practical therapeutics (including scope of practice and the importance of referral); in-depth Materia Medica research; and basic training for the clinical encounter. Following the didactic period, students participate in free consultations offered weekly at Montpelier Herbal Health. Students interact with at least one client a month (not including follow-ups), and meet collectively on a monthly basis to discuss administration and review open cases. The clinical period lasts for one year, by the end of which students are expected to lead supervised sessions.
Curricula and class schedules / assignments / examinations available by request.

Herb Camp for Kids, Montpelier, VT. Participated since 2003 as an original member in designing, organizing, and staffing a series of 4-day camps for children ages 4 to 14. Campers learn about local plants, by working directly with them, telling stories, singing songs and making medicines. This program is under the direction of Amy Goodman, Herbal Education Program, Food Works at the Two Rivers Center for Sustainability.

Columnist, The Herb Quarterly, Fremost, CA. Wrote a regular column for this magazine, from Fall 2006 to the present. Founded in 1978, the Herb Quarterly is America’s oldest herb magazine, bringing the joy of herbs and herb gardening with each new season.
Each issue introduces new herbs and fascinating herbal lore, provides tips on hard-to-grow varieties, and showcases gardens from around the world, complete with garden plans. the Herb Quarterly also keeps readers up-to-date on the latest research in medicinal applications, while tempting the palate with seasonal menus built around herbs and edible flowers.
