Cancer and Malignancies

There are many types of cancer and tumors, many being benign and limited in scope. Others, growing more out of control and potentially affecting vital organs, range from the more manageable prostate cancer to the deadly conditions of lung cancer and lymphoma. While all cancers are the result of mutation and derangement of cells, and their associated rampant growth, the more manageable conditions occur when the tumor is localized in a specific organ or tissue and doesn’t have access to systemic vasculature or lymphatic vessels to spread the mutated cells elsewhere in the body.
The greatest danger of cancer is the continued growth of cells, which will eventually damage the tissues in which they are located (the brain, liver, or lungs, for instance) and prevent them from functioning properly. Therefore, this may be one case in which the tried-and-true circulatory stimulants may not be appropriate, as they may stimulate angiogenesis (vessel growth) around the tumor and aid in its expansion. Some members of the Zingiberaceae (Ginger, Turmeric) have been shown to inhibit the action of certain chemotherapies.

Treatment Goal(s):
· Balance immune system; reduce / stall cellular mutation and growth rate; encourage elimination.

Primary Treatment:
· Administer medicinal mushrooms, in extract or whole-food forms (Inonotuus (Chaga), Ganoderma (Reishi), Maitake, Cordyceps, Lentinula (Shiitake)).
· Administer specific anti-tumor herbal treatments (Allium sativum, Garlic and Viscum album, Mistletoe stand out amongst the research).
· Support immunity and nourishment by altering the diet: eliminate sugars, caffeine and stimulants, hormonal and chemical additives. Add antioxidant, colorful foods such as blueberries, hawthorn berries, carrots, and deep green leafy vegetables. Use nourishing broth / decoction combinations with bone marrow, Astragalus, garlic and the medicinal mushrooms. Keep the diet light and highly nourishing, rich in whole grains, vegetables, and legumes.

Supportive Treatment:
· Use alterative and eliminative remedies such as Trifolium praetense (Red Clover), Arctium lappa (Burdock), Baptisia tinctoria (Wild Indigo), Calendula, and perhaps even Phytolacca (Poke).
· Use aperient herbs such as Rumex crispus (Yellowdock) to manage disgestive sluggishness.
· Manage fever appropriately using diaphoretics, fluid, and plenty of constant rest.
· Add herbs specific to the organ system(s) involved (i.e. Sereona, Saw Palmetto, for prostate).

Differential diagnoses, cautions, and other considerations:
· Even if your client wishes to only pursue natural treatments, I still think it is important to work with a ‘regular’ M.D. and/or oncologist who has seen similar cancers and can monitor the size and aggressiveness of each particular case.
