Depression
This condition refers to a decreased level of arousal
and stimulation in the nervous system. This can be a constitutional
weakness, or it can be related to stress, illness, trauma that have
depleted nervous system energies. It is usually considered an overall
condition of deficiency; the idea is to supplement and strengthen,
rather than sedate (obviously).
Treatment Goal(s):
· Restore and improve nervous system function.
Primary Treatment:
· Avena sativa (Oats) and Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s
Wort) as nervous system restoratives.
Supportive Treatment:
· Aromatherapy using both Lavandula officinalis (Lavender)
and Mentha piperita (Peppermint) to relax and stimulate gently.
· Isolation and elimination of any potential underlying subclinical
infection (Herpes, Candida, Staphylococcus, Epstein-Barr)
· Moderate, gentle exercise (start slow with simply walking
10-15 minutes daily).
Differential diagnoses, cautions, and other considerations:
· For severe depression with the inability to function during
the day or suicidal tendencies refer to a qualified practitioner
and counselor.
· If there is also anxiety, the addition of Scutellaria lateriflora
(Scullcap) may be helpful.
· For insomnia and/or adrenal depletion, use Withania somnifera
(Ashwagandha).
· For digestive and liver sluggishness, consider Verbena
hastata (Blue Vervain).
