Impotence

This condition, also known as “erectile dysfunction”, refers to the inability to achieve or sustain an erection adequate for intercourse. This will of course lead to the general inability to achieve ejaculation and therefore reproduction. There can be a variety of causes, but by far the most common is the constriction of the penile artery which is responsible for bringing blood to the penis, due to generalized atherosclerosis (See protocol for Atherosclerosis for general treatment considerations). The next most common cause is nervous system anxiety or deficiency. Other causes are related to prostatitis, side effects of medications (antidepressants, e.g.), or mechanical injury.

Treatment Goal(s):
· Increase blood flow to the penis, tonify appropriate systems.

Primary Treatment:
· Pausinystalia yohimbe (Yohimbe) is a strong vasodilator and relaxant. It can be very effective, but should be used with caution (see below) and started at low doses (½ tsp. once or twice daily).

Supportive Treatment:
· Vigorous exercise for both stress reduction and cardiovascular protection, at least 3-4 times a week for 1 hour.
· Smoking cessation is essential.

Differential diagnoses, cautions, and other considerations:
· For atherosclerotic profiles, follow the appropriate protocol and consider the addition of Ginkgo biloba in standardized form.
· For nervous system dysfunction / anxiety, use one or all of: Turnera aphrodisiaca (Damiana), Avena sativa (Oats), Piper methysticum (Kava-kava), and chocolate.
· For stress related adrenal depletion, follow the appropriate protocol. This may be one instance where Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng) may be appropriate.
· For medication-related erectile dysfunction, use a good dose of Ginkgo biloba standardized supplement.
· Yohimbe can be a powerful hypnotic. Monitor the patient closely for signs of hypotension (low blood pressure), dizziness, fainting, and discontinue the treatment if any of those symptoms or hallucinations develop. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or combining with alcohol.
