Infertility, men

Infertility in men is most often rooted in a general endocrine deficiency. This can have a number of related components: high stress can lead to adrenal and reserve depletion; liver sluggishness can affect levels of reproductive hormones; poor diet can lead to generalized inflammation, liver sluggishness, and endocrine deficiency; exposure to chemicals, pesticides, and synthetic hormones (from environment or diet) can disrupt endocrine function as well. Finally, one should never rule out mechanical causes for infertility: constrictive clothing in the genital area can inhibit sperm production.

Treatment Goal(s):
· Tonify the endocrine and hormonal systems, adjust any physiologic imbalances.

Primary Treatment:
· Vitex agnus-castus, in tincture, administered at a dose of one teaspoon once or twice daily.
· Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng), Smilax sarsaparilla (Sarsaparilla) and Sassafras albidum should be given as endocrine tonics. To this can be added Chamaelirium luteum (False Unicorn root).

Supportive Treatment:
· A cooling bitter herb should be added, as indicated, to the endocrine blend.
· Coriandrum sativum (Cilantro leaf) can have detoxifying and cooling properties.

Differential diagnoses, cautions, and other considerations:
· If there is thyroid and/or metabolic deficiency, use a good quality seaweed supplement or dietary addition.
· If there is a history of liver disease or damage, or exposure to harsh chemicals, the addition of a hepatic such as Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) and/or Schizandra chinensis may be of benefit, alongside bitter liver-clearing herbs.
· If there are autoimmune symptoms present, rebalance immunity as a first priority using Astragalus and the medicinal mushrooms (such as Ganoderma lucidum – Red Reishi).
