Laryngitis
This is a simple, self-limiting condition that involves inflammation
of the voicebox and vocal chords (the larynx) making the patient
unable to speak above a whisper. It is usually caused by straining
the voice, and sometimes related to a respiratory infection. It
will go away quickly if no talking is allowed.
Treatment Goal(s):
· Soothe irritation of the larynx.
Primary Treatment:
· Silence. Give a pad and paper.
· Demulcent herbs such as Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice),
Althaea officinalis (Marshmallow) and Ulmus rubra (Slippery Elm)
in cold-water infusion, sipped throughout the day.
Supportive Treatment:
· If the throat is sore and painful, use Salvia officinalis
(Sage) and Echinacea tinctures.
