Menorrhagia

A condition of prolonged and excessive uterine bleeding. It can occur in conjunction with mechanical imbalances of the reproductive system (such as fibroids, cysts or tumorous growths) or as part of hormonal imbalances (often seen during perimenopause). Potential anemia should be assessed.

Treatment Goal(s):
· Balance hormonal profile; stop bleeding; supplement blood.
.
Primary Treatment:
· Vitex agnus-castus, in tincture, administered at a dose of one teaspoon first thing upon rising, throughout the entire menstrual cycle.
· Administer Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) and Capsella bursa-pastoris (Shepherd’s purse) in doses of ½ tsp. 3-5 times daily.
· Administer Chamaelirium luteum (False Unicorn root, Helonias root).

Supportive Treatment:
· A tea of Alchemilla vulgaris (Lady’s mantle) and Rubus idaeus (Red Raspberry) is an indicated astringent and uterine tonic.
· Support liver function so that hormonal secretions are appropriately metabolized by the physiology using cholagogues such as Taraxacum officinalis (Dandelion), Curcuma longa (Turmeric), or Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice).
· Supplement the blood with Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai), Urtica diotica (Nettle), and Astragalus.

Differential diagnoses, cautions, and other considerations:
· Consult with a qualified health care provider to assess any potential mechanical disruptions that may exist, especially if symptoms do not quickly improve with treatment.
