Itchy
skin (Pruritus)
If the itch results from an insect or spider bite, treat it accordingly.
Otherwise, the most common case of itchiness is dry skin. Use a
simple emollient lotion or massage / body oil consistently to moisturize
the affected areas. If the skin becomes over-irritated from excessive
scratching, it may need to be treated as a wound. If associated
with a rash, treat it accordingly.
Treatment
Goal(s):
· Reduce itchiness and scratching.
Primary
Treatment:
· Apply essential oil of Matricaria recutita (Chamomile),
5 drops diluted in 1 Tablespoon of olive oil, to the affected area.
· Apply fresh poultices of Stellaria media (Chickweed).
Differential diagnoses, cautions, and other considerations:
· If no rash develops, skin is moisturized, but the itchiness
is chronic or lasts longer than a few days, consider gently detoxifying
the liver. Arctium lappa (Burdock) root can be administered as a
warm decoction.
· Washes made of Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice) tea can be
a bit more powerful anti-itch remedies.
· Pruritus can signal deeper and more concerning conditions.
Here are some examples: side effects of medications; liver disease
(jaundice can manifest as pruritus before any other symptoms); hypercholesterolemia;
psychiatric illness. If unsure, or if severe itching develops rapidly
and with no other obvious reason, refer the client for bloodwork
and a qualified medical diagnosis.
