Urinary
tract infection
Burning pain in the urinary tract, usually bacterial in origin,
resulting in increased urinary frequency, pain, uncomfortability,
lowered energy, and perhaps fever.
Treatment
Goal(s):
· Eliminate infection, relieve pain, manage fever.
Primary
Treatment:
· Administer strong infusions of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
(Uva-ursi) and Barosma betulina (Buchu) at high doses (1/2 gallon
daily).
· Administer 3 whole berries of Juniperus communis (Juniper)
twice or three times a day. Chew before swallowing.
· Drink unsweetened Cranberry juice, at least a quart daily.
Supportive
Treatment:
· Administer tincture of Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) as
a urinary anti-inflammatory and astringent, and as a diaphoretic.
· Use demulcent herbs such as Zea mais (Corn silk) and Althaea
(Marshmallow).
· Manage fever with diaphoretics such as Sambucus canadensis.
· Attempt to eliminate all sugar from the diet, at least
during the active treatment.
Differential diagnoses, cautions, and other considerations:
· If a pain in the lower back develops, in the area of the
kidneys, increase the doses listed above except for the Juniper,
which should not exceed 9 berries daily. Apply compresses of Zingiber
officinale on the lower back. Add tincture of Echinacea purpurea.
If symptoms do not improve within 24 – 48 hours, refer to
emergency treatment as the kidneys could become damaged very quickly.
· Continue primary treatment infusion at ½ dose for
a week after symptoms subside to assure complete resolution.
