Vaginosis
This
is a condition of bacterial or viral (and sometimes protozoal) infection
of the vaginal tissue. Symptoms include vaginal irritation and inflammation
that can be coupled with a darker-colored discharge. It should be
treated with the standard anti-infective protocol.
Treatment Goal(s):
· Eliminate infection, tonify tissue.
.
Primary Treatment:
· See standard protocol for Infection.
Supportive Treatment:
· Use a vaginal bolus if necessary, composed primarily of
Echinacea and Allium sativum (Garlic).
· Use external applications of Calendula, Achillea millefolium
(Yarrow) and Lavandula officinalis (Lavender), either in oil or
in sitz baths.
· Tonify vaginal and uterine tissue after the infection with
Rubus idaeus (Red Raspberry) and Astragalus.
Differential
diagnoses, cautions, and other considerations:
· Refer to a qualified health care provider for a Pap test
after the infection is resolved to detect any changes in the cells
of the cervix that may have initiated as a result of the inflammation.
This is especially important in cases of recurrent vaginosis or
infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV – genital warts).
· It is wise to abstain from sexual intercourse whenever
there is a vaginal, cervical, or uterine infection of any kind until
all symptoms are resolved.
